At its height in the 1960s, the Port Talbot steelworks employed around 20,000 people, before cheaper offerings from China and other countries hit production. More than 300,000 people worked in Britain’s steel industry in 1971; by 2021 it was about 26,000. Last year the U.K. government gave Tata up to 500 million pounds ($634 million) to make the Port Talbot steelworks greener. “We saw it with the coal industry and now it is happening again with the steel industry.

Akasa did not comment on its communication with Air India, but said the issue of pilot exits was "now behind us ... we are squarely back in growth mode". Air India declined to comment and the two chief executives did not respond to requests for comment. The dispute comes at the time of a hiring spree by Air India, with its arm, Air India Express, seeking to more than triple its fleet to 170 over five years. In recent weeks, Akasa has lost about a tenth of its 450 pilots, who left without serving out notice periods, some to join Air India Express.

Chandra said it was too early to discuss details of the export markets and there would be more clarity next year. Sales of EVs globally have been growing as tighter emission regulations push carmakers to increase the share of electric cars in their portfolio. Growing sales and the new Nexon EV have become the catalyst for its plan to launch EV-only dealerships, Chandra said. Tata has a country-wide dealership network for its gasoline and diesel cars through which it currently also sells its EVs.

"We believe India's electricity sector is going through a generational shift as the country looks to balance the economic growth with decarbonization," Goldman Sachs analyst Nikhil Bhandari told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia". Bhandari also told CNBC that India has a unique opportunity in green hydrogen thanks to the viability of round-the-clock renewable electricity. "This is unlike China, where we feel around the clock renewable electricity will be more economical towards the end of the decade." Goldman has a 12-month price target of 265 Indian rupees ($3.24) on NTPC, representing more than 30% upside from the current share price. LONDON, June 19 (Reuters) - JLR said on Monday it has partnered with supply chain mapping and risk analytics firm Everstream Analytics, which will embed artificial intelligence into the British luxury carmaker's system to help avert future global supply issues. The new AI technology, JLR said, will allow it to monitor its supply chain in real-time and protect the production of its current models and next generation of electric vehicles (EVs). JLR, a unit of India's Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) said Everstream's technology has already enabled it to avoid disruption at global freight ports to deliver vehicles to clients. In a post-pandemic world full of supply chain snarls, a growing group of startups and established logistics firms have created a multi-billion dollar industry to apply AI and machine learning to help businesses minimise disruption. JLR was hit particularly hard by a global shortage of semiconductor chips that forced major carmakers to curtail production of certain models.

AHMEDABAD, June 2 (Reuters) - India's Tata Group signed an outline deal on Friday on building a lithium-ion cell factory, based on investment of about 130 billion rupees ($1.58 billion), as part of the nation's efforts to create its own electric vehicle supply chain. Compared to the size of its population, India's car market is tiny. Tata Motors dominates its electric vehicle (EV) sales, which made up just 1% of India's total car sales of about 3.8 million last year. "The plant will go a long way in contributing to the development of the EV ecosystem in Gujarat and India," Vijay Nehra, an official in the Gujarat state government told Reuters. NEW DELHI, May 4 (Reuters) - Dozens of pilots, many from crisis-hit Go First, flocked to a Tata group hotel near Delhi on Thursday for walk-in interviews with the conglomerate's Air India airline. Air India said on Twitter the hiring drive in Delhi and Mumbai would be extended by a day to Friday. An Air India spokesperson told Reuters it had received more than 700 applications in response to an advert last week for pilots, which it is currently processing. Go First and Vistara - a Tata group joint venture with Singapore Airlines - declined to comment. A planned merger of Air India with Vistara and the launch of Akasa Air have increased competition for staff and planes as the industry recovers.

Tata Group, which regained control of Air India last year after decades of public ownership, put out just six paragraphs. "Air India negotiated hard and the team is very sharp despite having no prior aviation experience. A second person who watched the billions fall into place said the Air India negotiators were "methodical, tough and very sophisticated". Plans for announcements on the anniversary of Tata's Air India takeover slipped as engine talks wore on. Analysts caution many obstacles remain to Air India's plans.
Air India did not respond to a request for comment. Reuters reported last month Air India was closing in on a deal for about 500 jets. The aim is to corner 30% of the domestic air travel market over the next five years thus narrowing the gap with market leader IndiGo. Tata's four airlines, including two budget carriers, Air India and Vistara its joint venture with Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI), have a combined market share of 24%. Analysts have said Air India has the ability to claw back some passengers from rival Gulf carriers but not before it matches their quality of fleet and service.
BENGALURU, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Indian carmaker Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) beat analysts' expectations to post a profit for the first time in two years as improving semiconductor chip supplies and rising demand helped its luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) turn profitable. Like others in the sector, Tata Motors and JLR have been struggling to navigate supply chain disruptions and shortages of critical semiconductor components since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The total number of orders reached a record 215,000 units with its three most profitable models - the New Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender - accounting for three-quarters of the order book. GREATER NOIDA, India, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Tata group is considering setting up plants in India and Europe to produce battery cells for electric vehicles (EV), the chief financial officer of its auto unit told Reuters in an interview. With total sales of 50,000 electric cars to date, India's Tata Motors dominates the country's EV market and has outlined plans to launch 10 electric models by March 2026. The company expects electric models to make up a quarter of its total sales by 2025 from around 8% now. Localising cell manufacturing for EV batteries is key to increasing local components in electric cars and will help the automaker develop a local supply chain too, Tata Motors' P.B. Balaji said the investment in cell manufacturing will be made by its parent company Tata Sons but did not elaborate on the quantum or timeline.
CHENNAI, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Air India is carving out an ambitious renaissance under the Tata Group conglomerate, which regained control earlier this year after the airline was nationalised nearly seven decades ago. The report came days after Tata announced the merger of Air India with Vistara, a joint venture with Singapore Airlines, to cement itself as the country's largest international carrier and second largest in the domestic market after IndiGo (INGL.NS). The merged Air India entity will have 218 planes and fly to 52 domestic and 38 international destinations. Tata is in talks with more than two dozen companies to supply exclusive products to the new stores, according to the person familiar with the strategy, who did not name specific brands. Tata declined to comment on its planned beauty stores and the contents of the document seen by Reuters. The store opening plans, still under wraps, follow the recent launch of Tata's beauty shopping app, called Tata CLiQ Palette. The stores will have a bright red facade showing Tata CLiQ Palette branding, with 70% of the products inside being skincare and make up, according to the Tata document. The new stores should drive "sales across channels as a leading Beauty Tech destination for Gen Z & Millennials," the Tata document says.

REUTERS/Francis MascarenhasNEW DELHI, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) launched India's lowest priced electric car at a little over $10,000 on Wednesday as the country's only electric vehicle (EV) maker looks to draw in more buyers. Tata leads India's EV market, helped by government subsidies and high tariffs on imports. That is much cheaper than India's next most affordable EV - the electric version of Tata's Tigor compact sedan which starts at around $14,940. China, however, has some EV models that start as low as 32,800 yuan ($4,525).
